Second Sunday of Advent

In the Gospel Reading, for the Second Sunday of Advent, we are invited to consider John the Baptist and his relationship to Jesus. Matthew describes the work and preaching of John the Baptist.

John the Baptist appears in the tradition of the great prophets of Israel, preaching repentance and reform to the people of Israel. In this reading, John directs a particularly pointed call to repentance to the Pharisees and Sadducees, parties within the Jewish community of the first century. He cautions them, knowing that when Jesus comes, he calls them worse than hypocrites! They will have a difficult time accepting him and his teachings.

John marks the conversion of those who seek him out for a baptism of repentance. John's baptism can be understood as an anticipation of Christian baptism. In this passage, John himself alludes to the difference between his baptism and the one yet to come: “I am baptizing you with water, for repentance . . . He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

In this reading, John makes very clear that his relationship to the Messiah yet to come (Jesus), is one of service and less importance: “The one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals”.

John's preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John's message prepared the way for Jesus in the first century, we, too, are called to prepare ourselves for Jesus' coming. We respond to John's message by our repentance and reform of our lives. We are also called to be prophets of Christ, who announce by our lives, as John did, the coming of the Lord.

May this season of Advent prepare us to acknowledge our weaknesses and repent our sinfulness and be transformed by the Lord’s coming with love. I know that it is a path with prayer and resolve, we can follow.

Like John the Baptist, we can be prophets of Christ’s mercy and compassion to others.

Almighty and merciful God, may no earthly undertaking hinder those who set out in haste to meet your Son, but may our learning of heavenly wisdom gain us admittance to his company. Through Christ, our Lord.     
 

Reflexión Segundo Domingo de Adviento

 En la Lectura del Evangelio, para el Segundo Domingo de Adviento, se nos invita a considerar a Juan el Bautista y su relación con Jesús. Mateo describe la obra y la predicación de Juan el Bautista.

 Juan Bautista aparece en la tradición de los grandes profetas de Israel, predicando el arrepentimiento y la reforma al pueblo de Israel. En esta lectura, Juan dirige un llamamiento particularmente directo al arrepentimiento a los fariseos y saduceos, parte dentro de la comunidad judía del primer siglo. ¡Él les advierte, sabiendo que cuando Jesús venga, los llamará peor que hipócritas! Tendrán dificultades para aceptarlo a él y sus enseñanzas.

Juan marca la conversión de aquellos que lo buscan para un bautismo de arrepentimiento. El bautismo de Juan puede entenderse como una anticipación del bautismo cristiano. En este pasaje, el mismo Juan alude a la diferencia entre su bautismo y el que está por venir: “Yo os bautizo en agua, para arrepentimiento. . . Él os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego”.

 En esta lectura, Juan deja muy claro que su relación con el Mesías por venir (Jesús), es de servicio y de menor importancia: “El que viene detrás de mí es más poderoso que yo. No soy digno de llevar sus sandalias. ”

La predicación de Juan sobre la venida del Señor es un tema clave de la temporada de Adviento. Así como el mensaje de Juan preparó el camino para Jesús en el primer siglo, nosotros también estamos llamados a prepararnos para la venida de Jesús. Respondemos al mensaje de Juan con nuestro arrepentimiento y reforma de nuestras vidas. También estamos llamados a ser profetas de Cristo, que anuncien con nuestra vida, como hizo Juan, la venida del Señor.

 Que esta temporada de Adviento nos prepare para reconocer nuestras debilidades y arrepentirnos de nuestros pecados y ser transformados por la venida del Señor con amor. Sé que es un camino con oración y determinación que podemos seguir.

 Como Juan el Bautista, podemos ser profetas de la misericordia y compasión de Cristo para los demás.

Dios todopoderoso y misericordioso, que ninguna actividad terrenal obstaculice a los que se apresuran a salir al encuentro de tu Hijo, pero que nuestro aprendizaje de la sabiduría celestial nos gane la admisión en su compañía. Por Cristo, nuestro Señor.
